After so many years of D J ing and making tunes I still get a buzz from it all.
For example...This week end I will be on 2 radio stations around the same time. Midnight Saturday. I will of corse be presenting my show Creative Alternative Techno on 106.7 FM Melbourne and then if you tune into the National Broadcaster J J J I'll on there aswell. Cool Hey?
So yeah after wining D J comps , touring Europe with my techno band ( Lumukanda), presenting my own radio show for over 10 years it is great to be able to still get a little buzz from it all.
The mix up on J J J is to promote the Earthdance party.

Hey, How are ya?
No I haven't been playing out much lately so nothing to write about as far as that kind of thing is concerned.
Radio has been good. C A T has had the occasional guest Announcer (thanks Even Carr and John Carew). I have been filling in on Amber Tripps show Slide out wide (Monday 9am-11am) and I just can't do both shows every week and I'd rather do Monday mornings at the mo' so that's why the guys have been filling in for me on Saturday nights.
All so I wanted to let you know that I'm going to start doing the occasional Podcast or as I like to call them Domcast. So Stuff that in ya pod and smoke it.(tek house mix up)
I've been wearing one of my other hats, that of engineer (and a tiny bit of production) and a remix for a very talented young Lady named Rachel Delany.

So now Summer is over and we slink into Autumn. I love this time of the year.

Another weekend, another party, Another Maitreya. Another Monster Jam.
This was the second Maitreya and the second time we had the pleasure of being allowed to experiment with sound for 5 or 6 hours. I had a great time mixing the Jam Session in the chill area Sunday morning. Thanks D-Rectional and crew for trusting me on the Mix. All in all a great way to spend the long weekend.

Wow! What a crazy couple of weeks. Two weeks ago I was a best man for my very good friends Steve and Max. It was such a beautiful wedding as far as weddings go. Not to big not to small, just right. Well done guys. They are off on there honeymoon in Fiji.

Then a few days after that I had to speak at my Good old friend Angus's (D J Bribes) Funeral. It was a lovely service and HE would have loved the wake. There was people there that I hadn't seen in 20 years. It was amazing.

This was my first Rainbow Festival in 4 years and I loved it. This is Allen. He drove me out there but then freaked out and took off back to Mebourne. Thanks mate. That's O K kind of to be expected. My Job was engineering for the 6 hour electronic/organic expression session on Saturday night. This is when my ride flipped out and took off. It was such a mixed bag of emotions.
Some people loved it and some people disliked it. I also D Jed off the lappy at Umaliciouses Coffee Tent. This is Saint Fiona patron saint of coffee. and the woman herself, Uma peaking threw the ganita machine. That was alot of fun and we really got a bit of a buzz going. It was so good to run into old friends. Ah Michelle and The Blue Lama in fine form.Kat & Marco the Prom King & Queen.

I Know I know. I haven't been here for ages. You probably don't even check in on me anymore, I've been a bit slack I know. Almost 2 months wow.
I did mention in my last blog back in January that I had finally settled into my new studio and that's why I haven't been here. I been jammin man!
I think gig wise the best one in the last couple of months for me was The Maitreya Festival. The Cosmic Jam was brilliant! Thanks Krusty.
Another big change in my life has been taking on the position of category co-ordernator for the electronic and hip hop shows at my radio station. Finding fill ins, looking for new announcers, putting on a little fund raiser and putting a CD compilation together seem to be my main tasks. This could be fun? (More on that in a blog soon). I may need your help?
Also go check these ppl out. That's who I'm working for this weekend. The Fool's Gold Booty Challenge After Party.
Oh also I should mention that I'm not working full time at Arck anymore and am looking for full time work. Anyone? Anything?

Well it's been a while since I've been here. Wow over a month. Well the roller-coaster of life continues. So much has happened since I was here last, I don't know where to start? O K first of all I should say HAPPY NEW YEAR and all the best for 07 to you.
The Make Poverty History party was a great day in the park. The organizers really had there act together and the day just breezed by with chill beats and good company and no dramas. (Thanks Star) So this is what's been happening in my life.
Where I work during the day has moved to a new building in North Fitzroy. It's a very funky place and a lot better then where we use to be in North Melbourne. It's mixed zone so we can really crank the tunes and no complaints. Nice.
Then around the same time I moved house as well. The last place I lived in got sold on my birthday. The we had a month to get out. Yes it was a little stressful finding somewhere new. I now live a few streets away from where I was and it's a lot better house and I like it better then the last place. So then the next job was to get my studio set up again. Part of that job was waiting for my new MacBook Pro to turn up. I waited and waited. Then it turned up. I ran home and put the final piece of the puzzle together. When I booted it up everything looked cool until I started to try and install software. The Superdrive CD/DVD drive was NOT so Super. It was dead as a Dodo. I was Gutted.
Anyway 1 week later and my new machine arrives and @ the same time I picked up a brand new pair of Samson Rubicon monitors. I love me rubicons. I've never had a decent pair of self powered monitors. I've always monitored on top end Hi Fi stuff.

Then The NYE gig. Some friends from a far visited me and stayed the night. There was a Feller from the Shetland (Shetlin) Islands a young lady from Liverpool a lad from Ireland and of corse my American woman. I felt like I was in a different country. I played @ a gig on the other side of town. It was the best NYE gig I've had in at least 7 years. THANK YOU VOODOO CREW.
Now a week or so after all that the dust is starting to settle in my brain and it's time to start the new year.

Last week @ the Horse Bazaar was very, Umm? Different. I'm never quite sure how to act at a chill out gig. You can't be to excited can ya? I mean it's a chill gig right?
Anyway it was a good night. Very laid back. People chatting, not alot of dancing but then again it was a chill gig. It was great to put together a set on the total chill tip.
All in all a good night out. Thanks to the TEMPEST crew for allowing me to be a part of Escape from Kaos.

This Saturday night on 106.7 PBSFM @ Midnight on my radio show called C A T. I will be playing some of my all time favourite psychedelic trance tracks from the early 90's 'til now. I'm doing this as a special for our stations Radio Festival. Every year we have a Radio Festival. Back in the day we called it a subscriberthon. Over the years it changed to radiothon and now it's a radio festival. We can dress it up in many ways but the bottom line is to get as many Members (once called subscribers) as possible during this radio festival time. 2 weeks. July 5th to the 19th. The radio station I work on is a community radio station. We receive no money from the government. Only a handful of people get paid @ the station and the other 200 or so are all volunteers. To cut a long story short.....we always need mo'money mo'money. There are some fantastic prizes to win. A Car. A Surround sound system. Heaps of cool shit. Also during my show I'll be giving away some other prizes as incentive to anyone who rings up while I'm there. I got to say a big thanks to the men in black @ PSY-HARMONICS for giving me some of there best releases to give away. I reckon I'll be giving one away every 10 to 15 minutes during my time (12-2am) Also thanks to Mark from ARCK. Arck is a very funky music shop that only deals with computers and music and all it's other little toys. It's in North Melbourne on Peel Street near the VIC markets. At night the shop also does short courses on the latest software like Ableton Live and Reason and stuff like that. If you are just getting started in the computer world of music this is the shizzel. Mark has given me a few places in one of his Ableton live courses to give away. They are short courses and value on ebay @ $350 howzthat! So tune in turn on and get ya wallets out this weekend and help keep a good thing going.

The other night diggin through a crate of old records I found this little gem. Electro 2. I'd love to tell ya that I got it when it come out back in 83 but I didn't I got it a couple of years later. Brand new off the shelves of Rocking Horse records (they're still there). This record meant so much to me. I was 17 and not allowed into clubs yet. My older friends were telling me about this thing they had heard at a club called beat mixing. I was already into tape manipulation. Cutting and splicing. Making weird noises and was doing the S A E course in Milton. I was just starting to get into hip hop but more on the Steinski tip then on the rap side of things. Any way my friend (Miles) was telling me how the music "Just doesn't stop man! The tracks keep changing but the beat just keeps going." So how was the D J doing it I asked? With records he said. Wow . I thought that was so cool. I knew about tape loops and the benefits of having 2 copies of the same record and repeating just the breaks from both but I knew nothing about beat mixing. I just hadn't thought about the concept of pitch control. I had to sneak into this night club and hear this for myself. The name of the club was 42nd Street and it was at The New York Hotel on Queen St in Brisbane. It's not there anymore. It's a shopping mall now. The first beat mix I heard was Bohannan's Let start to dance into Double Dutch bus by (oh shit) the Neptunes ? Maybe? Then I just had a seat and watched the D J for a bit. I really thought that was some pretty amazing shit. Monday morning and I was at the record shop and there it was. Just sitting there. Waiting for me. Electro 2. It had the lot. Scratching, rapping, beat programming, cut and paste and this new thing I was just getting into called beat mixing. I ended up ordering a few more in the series but this one for me was the best of em. It 's over there with my links if ya want to have a listen but be quick I can't leave a gem like that there for too long. I'm sure if you are a D J you will want to order your own "real" copy for yourself. Enjoy. *REMOVED*

Well it's been well over a month since my last entry so I thought I better say something to show that I'm still about.
I've had a little computer problem and couldn't get online for a while. I suppose I could have gone to a internet cafe but I do like the comfort of my own home.
I've had a few gigs DJing here and there around Melbourne. The friday evening after work drinks gig I was doing @ Europop have come to an end. That was fun and as a D J a challenge (to keep everyone happy) every week. I love that venue and would like to do a one off party there.
I would also like to thank Ang. A new promoter on the scene that hooked me a with a couple of gigs in the last month or so. "You keep going girl!" The highlight for me in the last month was D Jing after Jimmy Little (a bit of a hero of mine). It was in O'Donnel gardens St Kilda during the day and early evening. It was a fantastic day. Well done Bo Svoronos from the City of Port Phillip indigenous arts unit. I had a great day and I'm sure everyone else there did as well :)
Now on the production tip. Electric BBQ (me&Miles) have been putting together a brand new show with brand new tunes. The jungle drums a are telling us that we might be playing back up north (northern NSW) soon and of coarse I'll let you know when and where that is as the date gets closer.
I've also been hanging out with an old friend from Brisbane. His name is Angus (D J Bribe). He has left Brizzo and is now living in Melbourne.
Me and Angus use to practise D Jing together back in the day (88-89) and he came second the year I won the QLD DMC. I haven't spent anytime with him since I left Brizzo in 89 and it has been great fun catching up with him.
On the radio tip. I gotto admit these graveyard shifts are killing me. Once I'm there everything is cool and I get hyped but it's the before and after effects that are the "issues" . Also I've never put it out there on the net (but say it on air all the time) if YOU want to send me some of your original music to play on my radio show please feel free to send a C D and bio and if I think it will fit in somewhere within the show I'll play it. Last weekend was the first Chill out party I have ever play @ in Australia and it went over a treat (even if I do say myself). It was called SUBMERGE and I'd like to thank the organizers for allowing me to D J there.

This weekend I am playing @ a Chill Festival called SUBMERGE. This is the festivals second year in production and it is held in the beautiful Hidden Valley Angahook State Forest Victoria at the Opoeia Eco Arts Retreat.
Chill out or Ambient festivals have been happening in Europe for the past 10 to 20 years. My electronic outfit LumuKanda played at a couple of these type events in the mid 90's in Belgian and Holland. Australia however has taken a little while to catch on (just like hip hop). This festival to my knowledge is the first Chill Festival in Australia and I am very happy to be a part of it. I'm sure it will grow and morph into something wonderful.
I'm D Jing around 11-30am to 1-00pm Sunday and then performing with Miles of Dub as Electric bbq (chillset) 5-30pm to 7-00pm.

Back In Melbourne.

I've been back in Melbourne for a few weeks now. It was so good to get out of town for a while and a pleasure to be a part of the EXODUS feztival.There's a pic of me over there in the green cap. The C A T club has been cancelled unto further notice. Why? I lost the venue. Another night was offered but it conflicts with to many other things so I think I'll just let it slide for a while or unto I can find another venue to hold the night at. I will for sure let you know about the next C A T club.
Last Saturday (5th) We did the Electric bbq thing at The Retreat Hotel on Brunswick St. It was a very rancho relaxo stylie. This is the 2nd time Electric bbq has played @ this gig. I don't know alot about it. I think the day is called ALIVE and it's put on by the Lukes of Melbourne. It happens in the beer garden and I think it's $5 to get in? Goes from about 3pm to about 9pm I think? I got a phone call the night before (friday night) telling me we was playing there. Next time we play there hopefully they will give me more notice so I can let you all know about it. The day is a fantastic concept all live electronic in a beer garden in Brunswick. Nice.

Well the last C A T club (2ndDec) was a very small turn out.(how can we compete with the inernationals?) Brian May played some very different, interesting rythmic tunes. I'm pretty sure most the ppl there liked what he was playing. There was more ppl on the dance floor then sitting down @ the bar and that's always a good sign.
Electric BBQ was a 3 piece this time with Damo on the decks, me on the Korgmicro and G4 and Miles on the MC-909. It was an hour and a half journey from 100bpm hip hoppy type beats to 140 bpm trance like sounds with some electro sounding stuff in the middle around 128bpm. The dance floor looked great from where I was standing. There were ppl break dancin' groovin',shuffling, stompin'. " Different headz dancing together." I like watching that and being part of that.
There was alot happening on that night. Juno Reactor / Perry Farrel the launch of Live music week at Federation Square. It was a horrible night weather wise. The rain was pissing down and the wind was crazy. So if you did make down THANK YOU.
Last Saturday night (10thDec) I DJed @ Deep Tribal Lore @ The Ace Morning Bar. They have a bit of a new sound system in the front room where I was playing and it was a very warm type of sound because of the new Sub woofer. It fills the room with BASS but not to over the top. NICE. Again the numbers where down a little but fun had by all. I didn't hang around to much out the back in the crystal cave but when I did have a peek it was going off. The DJ @ the time was Phil Divine. The door shut @ 5 an hour earlier then usual.

The next C A T club is on Friday 2nd of December.
My next special guest is BRIAN MAY. He hasn't been in Australia for about 4 years and has just got back. He was living in OSAKA and BERLIN and hanging out with the likes of THE BOARDOMS and playing @ parties like FLOWER OF LIFE and last year played @ the VOOV festival in Germany. This guy is both Selector and Muso.
He started a radio program on that fantastic community radio station PBS in 1990. It was called INTO THE GROOVY and it went for about 11 years. In my opinion he was one of the spear heads for the Melbourne Dub phenomena and was one of the original members of the band HIGH PASS FILTER. He was the guy doing all the electronic noodling.
Brian will be D Jing a 3 hour set. I'm sure it will be a very diverse and danceable set and defiantly BASS HEAVEY.
Also on the night a live set by ELECTRIC BAR B Q and of coarse I,ll D J for a couple of hours.

Party's like this. I'm so excited. I just can't hide it. I'm about to lose control and I think I like it.

Oh No.Last Saturday night was a Deep Tribal Lore night and I forgot to put up a blag on my blog. Oh well , it was wicked. There was some very nice new trance played out the back in the Crystal cave and some very freaky fractured beats out the front.
The sound system in the front room has sounded better. I hear management are already onto it. It wrapped up @ 6am.
Also thank you John Carew for presenting another fine morning of freaky electronic music between 2-6am Sunday morning on C A T radio show P B S 106.7.

Last Friday night was great. I started D Jing @ 10pm and went threw to about 1am.
10-11 was slower tempo Glitch/ breaky stuff . Then (11-12) a little old trance(?) The kind of stuff I use to play in the mornings @ Earthcore (93-95) and then I moved into some of that N Y punk disco stuff to lead up to the live set from Electric Bar B Q.
Electric Bar B Q played for about an hour. The sound was amazing and the Bar B was Smokin!

Then guest D J Miles finished off the night with a little new trance, some breaks and then the last half an hour or so was Old school hip hop (wicked).

Here we go Here we go!
My first ever club night. It's happening @ the ACE MORNING BAR and it's called THE CAT CLUB.
After 11 years of presenting my radio show Creative Alternative Techno on a friday nights between 10-12 THE FORCES THAT BE have moved me back to where I started 14 years ago an insomnia shift on Sunday mornings 2-6am. I,m now free to do something different on a friday night and that's this CAT CLUB . I,m going to try and do this on the first friday of every month at THE ACE MORNING BAR (791 Sydney rd). One room one sound system and @ the most 3 D J's for the whole night 10pm to 6am.
The music policy I know will be alot like the radio show. Mixing it up and not staying with one style for too long.
This friday is the first CAT CLUB and my very special guest is Miles Jackson the man behind THE ELECTRIC BAR B-Q. Miles will be doing a D J set and a live set.

Gee it's been a while. So what's been happening?
Well my partner in my electronic outfit (LUMUKANDA) Dan has been back in Australia.
He lives in Helsinki were our label is. He only comes back to Australia once a year so we tried to jam as much as possible.
We didn't really get any tunes finished. We just tinkered with new software drank a lot of tea and talked a lot of shit.
Something we did get sorted was our FTP stuff so we don't have to be in the same room any more to write music.
I,m rapped that we got this FTP stuff sorted out. We tried to write music like this before but it never quite worked properly.
Now everything is going extremely well and we are now slowly working on a new Album. We've managed to get an Album out every 3 to 4 years since 93 so it's well and truly time another one was out there.
On the DJing tip I haven't played out since my last update (in a club that is). I did DJ @ my friend Yumi's birthday party. It was a very nice little swaray. (Thanks Yumi)
I've picked up a few new Audio treats since I last played out @ Deep Tribal Lore and I can't wait for this weekend because I get to unleash them.
Yep it's on again this weekend.
The last DEEP TRIBAL LORE was very wacky and I had a lot of fun both D Jing and hanging with a great bunch of loons.
I got to thank the Ladies that were dancing on top of the bar. The Bar man loved it :) and it really got the room happening.

Deep Trbal Lore @ the Ace morning bar was pretty cool. Thank you Underground Pulse Revolution and the 13th MOON Crew for letting me be a part of it. It's also good to here that there will be events like that happening again there.
Last weekend I did my first gigs with Miles Jackson's live outfit called ELECTRIC BAR B Q. I was scratching and making freaky noises on my laptop. It was great fun. We played @ a pub on Sydney Rd called,, Ummm, The Retreat , I think. It was a MESSY CREW party. All in all a chill kind of beer garden affair. Nice. Then later that night but more like the next morning we played @ FLIRT. We sorted out all our techy type problems @ the gig we did earlier so we had no hick ups and pulled off a banging set. Even if I do say so myself :) I had a fantastic time working on this ELECTRIC BAR B Q project with Miles and we are currently working on a new show. I don't know when we will be playing next but we will be ready.
Now on the radio tip. Thanks a lot John Carew and Hamilton for filling in for me. Last week and a couple of weeks before that I,m sure they presented quality C A T programming.

Hello again...
First of all let me thank the ppl that pledged there subscription to my radio station P B S during the radio festival. I didn't get as many as I use to get on my old time slot but hey what do you expect. I,m only new at this time slot and ppl are still just discovering me. Tell ya friends about C A T on P B S. In Northern Europe I,m on around 6pm on a Saturday evening I think? (should really check that out) Anyway it's on between 2 and 6 am Sunday mornings here in Aussie land. So check it out if you get into the streaming radio thing. There's a link to the station just over there on the right hand side of the page.
This weekend should be a good one. If you live around Melbourne come along to this party (check out the flyer scroll down a bit). It will be something a little different I think. 2 rooms. Funky down beat hip hop /breaks/ live percussion in the front room as you walk in. Then as you find your way to the back of the venue it gets weirder and faster. I,m playing last I think maybe second last. I have to get someone to fill in for me for the last couple of hours on my radio show. It's gunna be a big night but I,m up for it.

Now Radio........I started @ PBS around the end of 92 sharing a insomnia shift on Tuesday mornings. The show was called S T A C K. I did this with a fella called Dave Nissani. After a couple of years doing that time-slot I moved to Friday nights 10-12 and the show was renamed to Creative Alternative Techno (C A T). That is were it stayed for 11 years. It is the longest running electronic music program in Australia. Now Creative Alternative Techno has been moved and once again I,m doing an insomnia shift. Sunday mornings 2-6am.
It's so sad. I was moved because I wasn't bringing enuff money into the station and I don't play any music recorded before 1990 by a four piece band from America. PBS is a community radio station and relies on subscribers and sponsorship. PBS gets no money from the government. It is COMMUNITY. Although these days it's the community with money that gets what they want when they want it. You poor kids better start liking the music the rich kids like. Is that community? All or should I say most of the announcers including myself are not paid any money to do there shows. They do it because they are passionate. To put it simply if you do not subscribe to electronic or hip hop programs on PBS they will slowly disappear. So if you are into hip hop or electronic music please give us some money. O K here we go. I don't know how long I,ll keep this up . I normaly lose interest in this kind of thing after a while but "hey" who know's I might really get into it?
So do you like electronic experimental dance music? I love it. I,m in a band called Lumukanda. Me and my mate Dan have released 3 C D under this name. Go see if you can find some of our music on the web. For sure some little bastard will be givin it away.
I have been D Jing since 1985. My First ever payed gig was @ my local roller skating rink (Skate-way Mt Gavatt). It was the only unlicensed venue in Brisbane @ that time with 1200's and I knew @ an early stage of my d jing "career" that I should get to know them well. Then in 1989 it was confirmed that I knew the 1200's well enough to win the Queensland Heat of the Australian D M C (wikeewikeewik). By the time I was 20 I had played in every nightclub in Brisbane and was a member of a 10 piece Funk/Rock outfit called US and the BEAT.
US and the Beat released one single on the 1990 FM104 Homegrown compilation. I loved this band so much. It was my first step over to the other side, rock and or roll. I played Samples on a Roland S-10 and scratched with 2 turntables and had lots of little percussion toys to play with when I wasn't sampling or scratching. Unfortunately sampling and scratching in a 10 piece funk band @ that time in Brisbane was totally unexceptable (by the masses). No one from overseas had done it yet so.......I,m so glad it's accepted now it took along time but Turntables can be and are excepted as instruments.
I was suffering in Brisbane From Big fish small pond syndrome so I took off to London. I lived there '90 to mid '91 in Tottenham (go spurs).
I worked @ TOWER RECORDS Piccadilly store and was the hip hop and dance 12-inch buyer there. Was it fun? You bet! It was a good time to be in London. To be truthfull I only D Jed a few times while I lived there. The Hard Club, The Brain, The Torture Garden and a couple of no name Squatter type parties. Hey what would Skippy know about dance music?
From London I moved to Arizona. On the way I made a small detour so I could play a couple of sets on the Canary Islands. Lovely.
Nothing much was happening in Arizona. I hung there for a few months then gave up trying to get gigs and just enjoyed the sights. The AZ Desert is beautiful. I loved Sedona. Finally I ran out of money and had to return to Australia.
Now I had a dilemma. After traveling and living in London I did not want to go back to Brisbane. I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with that place. I grew up in a southern suburb called Acacia Ridge and went to school in The Valley. Most of my mob are up there scattered between Lismore and Brisso. It's my stompin' ground, my home land, rainbow country and I know I'll end up back up there one day but for now MELBOURNE is the place to be for me.
When I got to Melbourne (end of 91) . I met Daniel Wittenberg and Arthur Arkin. We worked on a project called The Tomorrow People. One four track E P for the then starting Label Viscious Vynal. This music is quite possably the most commercial thing I have ever been involved in. Train-spotters beware it's pretty cheesy. It was a dash for cash. After that little project Arthur went back to Denmark and Daniel and myself started the now legendary LUMUKANDA.
The first Lumukanda Album is called Argalin and was the 3rd release on the now well established PSY-HARMONICS label. Araglin was also picked up by Belgian label Nova Zembla an off shoot to KK record. We then toured Europe. 20 dates, 10 countries in 2 months. That was mid 94. We were the first Aussie techno artist (for lack of a better word) to tour Europe. Yes it was fun and a great learning experience.
After that we came home and started writing our second Album BANTEER. Banteer was only released in Australia on PSY-HARMONICS.
We didn't have a European Label any more because we discovered Nova Zembla were ripping us off so we relied totally on export. Our 3rd Album, THAT WAS ZEN THIS TAO is released on Finnish Label Karelia records. I spent a little time in Helsinki promoting this album. Helsinki in Summer time. The place blew me away and I picked up a severe Sauna habit. Daniel liked it so much he married a Lovely Finnish Lass, bought an apartment and now lives there permanently. On average LUMUKANDA release a new Album every 3 or 4 years so it must be about time for another one? By the way if you're going to check out Finnish electronic music try Exogenic and Surreal Audio as well as Karelia.
D Jing in Melbourne and the bush. I could really carry on here but I,m not. Although I do want you to know this. I played @ every EARTHCORE from the time they began until '97. EVERY EARTHCORE.
